What we do
Reclaim
Reclaiming the sea means reclaiming possibility and joy. Through our Reclaim programmes, we provide people with tools to reconnect with the ocean. These trauma-informed programmes, which can include swimming, surfing, and paddleboarding lessons, are designed to break down barriers to access, affirm and instill self-confidence, and foster a sense of belonging.
Refugees and asylum seekers are among the most marginalized communities in the UK, facing disproportionately high levels of trauma and mental health challenges. Many have endured dangerous journeys due to the lack of safe legal routes, leaving lasting emotional and physical scars.
Reclaim programmes are designed to meet participants where they are. Whether through swimming, surfing, paddle boarding, or other water-based activity, we tailor each programme to the needs and interests of the people we serve.
Programmes typically run for six to eight weeks featuring sessions that build on each other as participants gain confidence and form strong community bonds together.
Every session begins with a grounding circle, where our affirmations set the tone for an inclusive, supportive experience.
Water activities follow, providing a chance to enhance skills and connections. Each programme session concludes with a shared meal, allowing participants and volunteers to reflect, bond, and grow together.
Our programmes often mark our participants' first experience with their local waters. Through our trauma-informed, participant-led approach, we've witnessed remarkable transformations and seen participants accomplish water activities they never thought possible.
Our Programmes
-
Plymouth
Since launching our pilot programme in 2022, Reclaim The Sea has led transformative men’s and women’s programmes each summer, offering trauma-informed swimming, surfing, and paddleboarding sessions for refugees and asylum seekers to safely reclaim their relationship with water.
-
North Somerset
In summer 2024, Reclaim The Sea launched a transformative pilot programme in Weston-super-Mare, continuing our mission to support healing through access to water. This innovative programme was specifically tailored to women who were feeling isolated along with dealing with the struggles of forced migration.
-
Kent
In partnership with Kent Refugee Action Network (KRAN), we are developing a programme that promises to create safe, empowering opportunities for young women to connect with the water and build community. Launching 2025.
